PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania track & field teams had a successful start to the weekend. The teams are at two meets this weekend, the Larry Ellis Invitational at Princeton and the Tom Jones Memorial at the University of Florida.
Â
Among the highlights from Friday's first day at both meets…
Â
*Senior Isabella Whittaker clocked 23.34 in the women's Invite 200 in Florida, a school record and good for fifth in Ivy League history.
Â
*Junior Aliya Garozzo bettered her own record in the women's Invite 400 hurdles in Florida (57.22 seconds) and also moved into fifth in Ivy history in that event. Freshman Amelia Kristen, meanwhile, moved up to seventh on the program's list in the event, clocking 1:00.31.
Â
*In the women's 5K at Princeton, Lily Murphy (15:59.50) broke Abby Hong's six-year-old school record and became the first woman in program history to break 16 minutes in the event. Senior Maeve Stiles nearly also pulled off the feat, her 16:00.64 moving her into second on the program's all-time list behind Murphy. Olivia Morganti, meanwhile, clocked 16:06.18 which jumped her into the program's top 10 at No. 4. They went 2-3-4 in the event, behind Alexandra Carlson of Rutgers (15:53.14).
Â
*Back in Florida, freshman
Ryan Matulonis won the men's 400 hurdles, his time of 50.86 seconds moving him up to fourth in program history.
Â
*In the men's pole vault (Invite),
James Rhoads and
Scott Toney went second and third behind Kentucky's Keaton Daniel. Both topped out at 5.40 meters (17 feet 8.5 inches), which is a PR for Toney and keeps him fourth on program's top 10 list.
