Women's Tennis Edges Minnesota Out on the Road, 4-3
TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Pennsylvania women's tennis team continued its spring break trip on Tuesday afternoon, topping Minnesota 4-3 at the IMG Academy.
Penn edged out its second Big Ten opponent so far this season with the win over the Gophers and a victory against Penn State back in January.
The Quakers took an early lead in the match earning the doubles points to lead 1-0.
Esha Velaga and
Gavriella Smith started doubles off strong beating Aiva Schmitz and Sofia Pinto 6-0.
Eileen Wang and
Sabine Rutlauka moved to 2-0 as a doubles pairing off a 6-4 victory over Mia Liepert and Emma Belluomini.
Freshman Velaga pushed the Red and Blue's lead to 2-0 to open singles with a 6-3, 6-4 contest over the Gophers' Liepert. Minnesota grabbed the next two bouts to notch the match up at two. Sophomore
Maya Urata slashed Big Ten foes two-battle run with a six slot 6-3, 6-3 win over Sarioglan to push the Quakers ahead 3-2.
Smith clinched Penn's tenth win of the year with a thriller over Belluomini. The junior took the first set 7(7)-6(2) before securing a 6-4 second set win to secure the first spring break win of the season.
