PHILADELPHIA – The Cardiac Quakers strike again! The #14 University of Pennsylvania men's lacrosse toppled #7 Cornell at Franklin Field on Saturday afternoon, completing a comeback 11-10 double overtime victory to remain undefeated in Ivy League play.

Senior Cam Rubin carried the offense in the win, scoring a season-high six goals, including the game-winner to push Penn to 3-0 and the top spot in the Ivy League standings.

*Goalkeeper Emmet Carroll kept the Quakers alive the entire game, tying his season-high 17 saves. Carroll did it all defensively, recording a pair of turnovers and ground balls to go with his double-figure tally.

*Newley named Midseason All-American Brendan Lavelle showed why he earned the honor earlier this week, leading the defense in turnovers (4) and ground balls (3).

*Five Quakers, including Rubin, hit the back of the Big Red's net, with sophomore Griffin Scane netting a pair to account for the other multi-goal scoring in the contest. Chris Canet, James Shipley, and Ben Smith each scored to even out the goals against Cornell.

How It Happened
The ranked battle was back-and-forth from the start, as the reigning Ivy League Offensive Player of the Week, CJ Kirst, scored 30 seconds in to give Cornell an early lead, but Rubin opened his six-goal quest a minute later to even the score.

The Big Red were an offensive force most of the first, going on a 5-1 run to lead 6-2 with 5:57 left of the first. Mid-run, Rubin scored his second of the quarter off a Casey Mulligan feed to account for the sole Quaker goal in the seven-minute stretch.

Junior Canet slashed the run to score his first goal of the year to bring Penn within three, while sophomore Scane closed out the first with his seventh of the year off a dish from Tynan Walsh to push the deficit to 6-4.

Both offenses were quiet after the first 15 minutes, with each team only scoring once heading into the halftime break. Red-hot Rubin scored his fourth hat trick of the year at the 12:51 mark, while Cornell's Hugh Kelleher scored six minutes later to push the Big Red's lead to 7-5 after the first 30 minutes of Ivy League action.

The Quakers came out of the break with a point to prove, as Shipley and Rubin netted back-to-back unassisted goals within the first four minutes of the half to tie the game at seven.

The lead changed hands a few more times in the quarter, as Cornell scored to lead by one again with 10:43 on the clock, but junior Smith answered three minutes later to knot the game at eight.

Cornell's Kirst gave the Big Red their final lead of the day five minutes later, but Rubin answered with his fifth goal to keep the Red and Blue in it at nine to end the third. A few minutes in the fourth quarter, Scane gave Penn its first lead at 10-9 to switch the momentum of the contest.

The defenses held strong after Scane's goal, keeping both offenses scoreless till Kirst found a hole to net his fourth and final goal to tie the game ten and force overtime.

The pair of keepers stood tall in the first overtime period, with Carroll saving the day with 1:10 left and Matthew Tully keeping the Big Red alive with the seconds counting down as Rubin slammed one at his net.

The second overtime period went in Penn's favor as Cornell's Ryan Goldstein turned the ball over a minute in to allow Lavelle to scoop up his fourth ground ball and help clear for the Quakers. Deep in the offensive zone, Shipley faked right and tossed the ball to his fellow senior Rubin, who pulled a similar move before completing his second hat trick of the day with the game-winning goal to give the Red and Blue their first overtime victory of the year at 11-10.
