PHILADELPHIA – For the sixth time this year and second straight week, freshman
Mataya Gayle of the University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team has been named Ivy League Rookie of the Week, the conference announced on Monday afternoon.
Â
Gayle is joining some elite company in Ivy League history. Now with six rookie honors this season, she is just the 25th freshman in conference history with at least six. In program history, she is the seventh. The last time the Quakers had a rookie with six honors in one season was
Kayla Padilla in 2019-20.
Â
The Georgia native averaged 14.5 points on .414 shooting through two games this past weekend. She opened an Ivy doubleheader weekend in The Palestra with 11 points, three steals, two rebounds, two assists, and a block in just 24 minutes against Brown. The following night, she dropped in 18 points with four three-pointers to go with six boards, three steals, and a block.
Â
Gayle and the Quakers continue a four-game homestand this upcoming Saturday, hosting No. 25 Princeton at 2 p.m.
