Softball Drops Games to Saint Francis (Pa.), Liberty Saturday at Liberty Classic

LYNCHBURG, Va.- The University of Pennsylvania softball team dropped both games on Saturday afternoon at the Liberty Classic, against Saint Francis (Pa.) and Liberty.

The Red and Blue fell to the Red Flash, 7-6 in the bottom of the seventh via a walk-off three run home run, and then fell short 4-1 against the Flame.

FINAL: Saint Francis (Pa.) 7, Penn 6
The Quakers got on the board in the top of the first inning, as Julia Mortimer doubled to right center with a pair of runners on to bring home Brianna Brown. Sammy Fenton then followed up with a single to the shortstop to bring home Mortimer. Mortimer continued to swing a hot bat, as in the top of the second she delivered with runners on once again. A sacrifice fly drove in Madison Bauerle, making the game 2-0. An error by the Saint Francis 2B allowed another run to come across the board in the top of the third. In the bottom of the frame, The Red Flash made the score 3-2, with a two RBI double to right center.

In the sixth, Jade Montgomery led off the inning with a single, stole second and was brought home by a Brown single. Mortimer then grabbed her third RBI of the day as she drove in Brown to give Penn a 6-2 lead.

Saint Francis stormed back. In the bottom half of the inning, Savannah Nash launched a two-run homer which cut Penn's lead to 6-4 and knocked starter Payton Bean out of the game. In the bottom of the seventh, Olivia Ulam hit a three-run homer to secure the walk-off, 7-6 win for Saint Francis.

FINAL: Liberty 4, Penn 1
Liberty scored first, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Four scoreless innings went by until the Flames added insurance in the bottom of the sixth as Penn starter Rachel Riley gave up a pair of solo home runs. That made the score 4-0.

Penn got some traffic on the bases in the top of the seventh but could only bring in one run as Maia Hartley scored off a wild pitch with one out.
