PHILADELPHIA – The recognition keeps coming for the University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team coaching staff led by James C. Gentle Head Coach
Brian Gill, as the crew landed United Soccer Coaches (USC) Northeast Region Staff of the Year.
Gill and his assistant coaches,
Liam Abdalla,
Steve DeMatteo, and
Matt Poplawski, earned the prestigious award for the second time in three seasons after leading Penn to its third straight Ivy League regular season title.
The Red and Blue had a stellar 2024 campaign, posting a 13-2-1 overall record and a perfect Ivy record. The Quakers' perfect 7-0-0 Ivy League season is the 14th in Ivy history, the fifth this century, the first since 2021, and the first for Penn since 1971. The team knocked off #3 Pitt (1-0), #21 Hofstra (3-1), and #16 Cornell (3-2) to account for the ranked victories this year.
In the quest for a spot in the NCAA Men's Soccer Championship, the Quakers earned the #6 seed, the highest in Penn history, earning a first-round bye and the right to host the second round at Rhodes Field.
The staff led a team that excelled on the field as seniors
Leo Burney (defensive) and
Stas Korzeniowski (offensive) earned Ivy League Players of the Year honors for the second time in their careers to go along with nine Quakers grabbing spots on the All-Ivy teams. Gill earned his third consecutive Ivy League Coach of the Year honors to pair with the USC distinction.
