PHILADELPHIA – One of 10 honored, senior punter
Albert Jang was named a semifinalist for FCS Punter of the Year, announced by the Augusta Sports Council on Wednesday afternoon.
The candidates were evaluated by the FCS Punter of the Year Award committee on their overall statistics and contribution to the team. Particular emphasis was placed on net punting average, number of times a punt was downed or kicked out-of-bounds inside the 20-yard line, and percentage of punts not returned. The winner must display team leadership, self-discipline and have a positive impact on the team's success.
Jang put together a tremendous senior season for Penn, earning first-team All-Ivy laurels. He led the Ivy League in punting average (44.0) and had nine inside the 20-yard line. His nine punts of 50 yards or more also tied for first in the conference and had a career-long 71-yard punt against Harvard in Week 9, the program's longest since 2015.
His contributions helped Penn rank first in the nation as a team in punt return defense (0.20 yards per attempt) and finished 13th in net punting (41.0).
In addition to his success on the field, Jang had himself a stellar year in the classroom and was named the Quakers' Academic All-Ivy representative.
Other semifinalists include Richmond's Aaron Trusler, Northern Arizona's Ben D'Aquila, Montana State's Brendan Hall, Youngstown State's Brendon Kilpatrick, Mercer's John McConnell, Gardner-Webb's Nick Bigelow, Weber State's Oscar Doyle, Valparaiso's Sam Johnson, and Murray State's Thomas O'Hara.
A national voting body of Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) sports information directors, conference representatives and sports writers will choose the winner from the 10 semifinalists. The winner will be announced on Monday, December 16.
