Villanova Tops Field Hockey in City 6 Finale, 5-1

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania field hockey team fell to Villanova, 5-1, at Ellen Vagelos Field Sunday afternoon.
 
Julia Ryan netted another goal—her fifth of the season—for the Quakers (2-8). Sabine de Ruijter scored a career-high four goals for the Wildcats (7-5) in their victory.

*Ryan has scored a goal in four of the last five games. She has recorded at least one point in all but three games this season and has 14 points total.
 
*Sophie Freedman recorded her first assist of the season.
 
*Ava Hughes made her first collegiate appearance in the cage, as the Quakers substituted her late for Ruby de Frees.
 
*Penn outshot Villanova, 15-14. It is the fifth game in a row in which the Red and Blue have outshot their opponent.
 
How It Happened
The Wildcats scored within the first two minutes of the contest. They received a penalty corner which Emma Schwarz inserted. She found Raina Smolik who set up de Ruijter for the goal.
 
Ten minutes later Villanova was awarded a penalty stroke. de Ruijter took it for the Wildcats and ripped it past de Frees.
 
Villanova held a 2-0 lead going into halftime. Early in the third quarter, Villanova received a penalty corner which de Ruitjter scored for a hat trick. The Wildcats then extended their lead to four with two and a half minutes remaining in the third.
 
Penn got on the board early in the fourth quarter. Freedman launched a pass from outside the circle which Ryan redirected for the goal. Two minutes later, de Ruijter scored her fourth goal of the afternoon to give Villanova a 5-1 lead which stood for the rest of the contest.

The Quakers will travel to Hanover, N.H. to play Dartmouth on Friday at 2:00 p.m. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+.
