PHILADELPHIA -Â The University of Pennsylvania women's tennis team has played through three day's worth of matches as the Quakers host the ITA Regionals at the Hamlin/Hecht Tennis Centers.
In doubles play, the Quakers have three teams defending home courts. Two of the doubles teams consist of all seniors.
Gavriella Smith and
Saige Roshkoff took down NJIT Salvi Shalom and Feyza Ebrar Aydin 8-1 in round 64 and continued taking the fight into round 32, taking the win against Lehigh Allyce Gaborik and Maggie Forkner in an 8-7 tie that resulted in 7-2 Penn favor.
Eileen Wang and
Sabine Rutlauka defeated St. Francis Kelly Dowunoa and Kallyhan Kadzinski 8-3 in round 64 and then Stony Brook Sara Annamaria Medved and Cornelia Bruu-Syversen 8-3 in round 32.
The second-year and first-year team of
Esha Velaga and
Lara Stojanovski showed lots of grit, beating Wagner's Victoria Madail Perez and Daniela Hernadez 8-4 in round 64 and then a comeback battle in round 32 to take down Rutger's Mai Nguyen and Zeynep Illker.
Penn sent six athletes into the main draw, three of whom have made it into round 16. Wang, Rutlauka, and Velaga keep the Quaker's hopes alive and will try to compete to the very end.
Other notable performances: Saige Roshkoff and
Sasha Motlagh did compete in the qualifying draw but ultimately could not advance.
Maya Urata and
Sasha Motlagh also made it into doubles but lost in round 64.
Penn will keep rolling as they go into round 16 in doubles and singles at the Hamlin/Hecht Tennis Centers on Sunday starting at 9:30 a.m.
