PHILADELPHIA -
Esha Velaga's run at the WTA 125 Ennoble Care Philly Open came to an end Sunday, as the University of Pennsylvania women's tennis standout fell to No. 3 seed Ekaterina Ovcharenko, 6-2, 6-4, in the qualifying singles draw at Hamlin Tennis Center.
Playing on her home court after receiving a wildcard into the qualifying draw, Velaga faced Ovcharenko in the first round of qualifying. Ovcharenko, the No. 3 seed in the qualifying field, took control early, winning the opening set 6-2.
The Quaker responded in the second set, staying within striking distance as the match progressed. Ovcharenko ultimately closed out the set 6-4 to secure the victory and advance in qualifying.
Despite the loss, the match marked a significant opportunity for Velaga, who competed against professional opposition on the same court where she has built her collegiate career with Penn.
