PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania rowing programs begin the racing portion of their fall season with the
Navy Day Regatta, which takes place Sunday on the Schuylkill River.
All three programs will have multiple boats competing in Sunday's racing.
All three programs enjoyed strong finishes last year and are looking to build upon that momentum as they begin the 2024-25 season.
The men's heavyweights saw its Varsity Eight take fifth at the EARC Sprints last year, its best finish at that event since the 2001 crew also finished fifth, and at the IRA Championships the 1V8 finished eighth (its best finish since 2000) while the 2V8 and 3V8 both beat their pre-race seeds in finishing ninth and 12th. Head coach Al Monte was recipient of the IRCA's Leadership Award, and during the summer senior Sam Sullivan was named the USRowing U23 National Team Male Athlete of the Year after he led the Men's Eight to silver at the World Rowing U23 Championships.
The men's lightweights had an incredible spring, winning the Jope Cup at Sprints for just the second time in program history (the other coming in 1967). They followed that up by having all three boats medal at the IRA National Championships on the way to a second-place finish in the team standings. In addition, the Varsity Eight also won the Dodge Cup, the Wood-Hammond Trophy, and the Callow Cup in the same season for the first time since 1978.
The women, meanwhile, made the NCAA Championship for the third straight season and finished tenth as both the Second Varsity Eight and the Varsity Four beat their seeds at the event. That came after the Ivy League Championship, where three boats including the Varsity Eight earned silver medals. The Quakers are starting a new chapter in program history, as Bill Manning was named head coach over the summer.
