PHILADELPHIA – Following its first victory of the 2023 season, the University of Pennsylvania sprint football team heads north to take on Army Friday evening at Shea Stadium, with kickoff set for 7 p.m.

The Quakers took down Cornell last Friday at Franklin Field, 21-9 to improve to 1-1 through the season's first two games.

The Army Series
The Black Knights have won the previous six matchups against Penn, leading the all-time series, 16-3. The Quakers' last victory over Army came back in 2016, a 14-9 win at Franklin Field. That year, the Red and Blue went 7-0 en route to an undefeated season and a CSFL title.

Running to the First Win of the Season
The Quakers recorded their first win of the season at home Friday against their Ivy rival Cornell, earning a 21-9 decision. With a strong defensive performance and an even stronger run game, the Red and Blue were in complete control. Penn's defense recorded one forced fumble, two interceptions and four sacks, giving Cornell no breathing room while only allowing a total of 120 total yards. Sophomore linebacker
Gavin Griswold totaled nine tackles (eight solos), with 1.5 sacks, while
Josh Johnson and
Jordan Ortiz each had a pick. The running game was led by freshman
JT Goodman, who rushed 26 times for 76 yards and punched in two touchdowns, while junior
Tom Rebstock scored the third TD. The combination of Goodman—who was named CSFL Rookie of the Week—Rebstock and quarterback
Ty Scherer totaled a combined 128 yards on the ground.

Scouting The Black Knights
Army won its first game of the season Saturday at Mansfield, 47-6. The Black Knights had an impressive offensive game, scoring three touchdowns in the first quarter, two of them on the ground. Army scored another 16 points in the second half, including a safety. Henry Beck carried the ball 15 times for 128 yards and two touchdowns, while Mikal Willeke tossed two TDs through the air for 157 yards. The Cadets fell to Navy, 28-21, in last season's CSFL Championship Game in Annapolis.

It's the third year at the helm for William R. Wagner Head Coach of Sprint Football
Jerry McConnell. Last season, the Quakers went 3-4 overall and once again competed for a CSFL South division crown right until the final whistle.
