NEW YORK CITY – The University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team dropped a heartbreaking, 1-0 decision at Columbia Saturday night in the Ivy League opener for both teams. Penn fell to 4-4-1 overall while the Lions are now 7-1-1 overall.

Quaker Notemeal
*Penn was outshot by the Lions, 14-10, but put six of their attempts on goal while their hosts had just one.

*Four different players had two shots for the Quakers: senior Lauren Teuschl and freshman Magali Capdevila put both of their efforts on goal, while Megan Lusher and Abbey Cook also had two.

How It Happened
Columbia has always been a tough place to play for Penn, and Saturday was no exception. With the weather not doing anyone any favors, the teams battled to a scoreless stalemate through the first 45 minutes. Penn certainly had a good run of the play and put three shots on goal, Teuschl twice and Taylor Ferraro once forcing Columbia keeper Paige Nurkin to keep things level.

Penn had two nice opportunities early in the second half. Before the hour mark, Lusher and then Capdevila forcing Nurkin into nice stops.
In the 66th minute, Penn goalkeeper Laurence Gladu faced a sturdy test when Samantha Weiss drove into the goal box from the left wing. The senior stood tall, parrying Weiss' shot just over the bar and keeping things scoreless.
As the match neared the final 15 minutes, Capdevila nearly put Penn in front with a looping shot that Nurkin had to dive to push wide and keep things scoreless.
Columbia's goal came with a little more than 10 minutes left. The Lions got a corner kick, and when the ball came in Gladu went to punch it away. Instead, the ball hit off her hands and went into the goal.

Penn had one more chance less than a minute after Columbia's goal, getting a free kick at the top of the Lions' box. However, Lusher's effort was blocked and went wide.
