Women's Soccer Continues City Run in Final Tests Before Ivy Play

PHILADELPHIA – In its last two tests before the start of Ivy League play, the University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team continues its run through the city with a pair of matches this weekend. After beating Saint Joseph's last Sunday on Hawk Hill, 1-0, the Quakers host Villanova Thursday night at Penn Park and then make the short trip to North Broad on Sunday to face Temple in an afternoon matinee.

The Series with Villanova
Thursday's match will represent the 17th meeting between the Quakers and the Wildcats, with VU holding an 11-3-2 lead in the series. That said, Penn is 3-0-1 over the last four meetings including a 2-0 win two years ago at Rhodes Field and a 1-1 draw out on the Main Line last year.

The Series with Temple
The Quakers hold an 8-5-2 lead over the Owls and are 3-0-2 over five meetings dating back to the 2012 season. That includes ties each of the last two seasons, 1-1 at Temple in 2021—Penn's first game back after not playing the 2020 season—and 0-0 last season on Rhodes Field.

Quaker Notemeal
*Penn started the season 2-0-0 for the first time since 2018 and just the second time since 2015, defeating American and Delaware on Penn Park to start the 2023 campaign.

*With their wins last week over Lafayette and Saint Joseph's, Penn at 4-2-0 has already surpassed its win total from last season (when the Quakers went 3-6-7 and set a program mark for ties in a season).

*Dr. Krissy Turner is in her second season coaching Penn after 24 years at Monmouth (1998-2021) and three at Lafayette (1995-97). Coincidentally, her 300th win as a head coach came last Thursday against the Leopards, and she enters the weekend 301-176-52 all-time (.618 win percentage).

*Interesting note: every Penn women's soccer match so far this season has ended with a 1-0 scoreline. Last season, four of the Quakers' last six matches also were decided by 1-0 scores.

*Senior goalkeeper Laurence Gladu kept a clean sheet for the first 214 minutes of the season, has kept her goal intact for the last 234:07 of match time entering the weekend, and already has four shutouts this season. That gives her 11 for her career, which is tied for fifth on the program's all-time list with Sarah Banks (2010-12).

*So far this season Gladu, a two-time honorable mention All-Ivy pick, has 19 saves while allowing just two goals.

*In front of Gladu, fellow senior Adrienne Evans is the only field player to go the full 90 in all six matches so far this season.

*The back line was bolstered last week by the return of senior Ginger Fontenot. A second-team All-Ivy pick a year ago, she played just one half across Penn's first four matches due to injury but was on the field for all 180 minutes last weekend against Lafayette and SJU.

*Penn's goal scorers last weekend were Mallory Lucas (Thursday vs. Lafayette) and Utah transfer Megan Lusher (Sunday at Saint Joseph's). In both cases, they were the first goals of each player's collegiate career.

*Junior Isobel Glass made the Ivy League honor roll after Week 1, and with good reason. Her sublime, re-directed header provided the only goal in Penn's 1-0 win over Delaware on Sunday, and two days earlier she drew the penalty that led to senior Lauren Teuschl's converted penalty kick for the only goal in the Quakers' 1-0 win over American.

*The assists on Glass's goal the opening weekend went to sophomore Clare Robke—who curled in the cross that Glass headed home—and freshman Mia Fuss. It was the first collegiate point for both players.

*Overall, Coach Turner has played at least 15 players in every match this season including a season-high 18 in each of the last three matches.

*Penn had three women score more than one goal a year ago. The two who return, Glass (3 goals in 2022) and Teuschl (2), are already on the scoring ledger in 2023.

*Glass and junior Janae Stewart—who is out with an injury—are the only returning players who saw time in all 16 matches last season, Glass starting 13 times and Stewart five times. However, seniors Fontenot and Gladu (GK) both started all 15 matches in which they played last season while senior Paige Kenton made 14 starts, Teuschl made 13, and Maya Leschly made 12.

*An honorable mention All-Ivy honoree in 2021 and 2022, Gladu finished last season with a 1.15 goals-against average, playing all but 112 minutes between the pipes. Penn's other returning goalkeeper is sophomore Annabel Austen.

*Teuschl, meanwhile, was a second-team All-Ivy pick in 2021 after she tied for the team lead in assists (7) and tied for second in points (13).

*Expect to see a lot of new faces playing major roles as the season progresses. Lusher has seen extensive time in every match so far and six of the eight freshmen on the roster have also seen time (Magali Capdevila, Avery Chapel, Mia Fuss, Leah Finkelman, Abbey Cook, Taylor Ferraro) with five of them starting at least once (Ferraro 4 starts, Capdevila 3, Chapel 3, Cook 3, Fuss 1).
