HENLEY-ON-THAMES, U.K. - The University of Pennsylvania women's rowing team made a nice splash in its racing debut at the famed Henley Royal Regatta on Wednesday afternoon, as the Quakers' 'B' boat was victorious in its first-round dual as it races for The Island Challenge Cup.
Penn's Second Varsity Eight clocked 7:41 across Henley's 2,112-meter course on the River Thames and defeated Edinburgh University's 'B' boat by 2.5 lengths. That advanced the Quakers to the Round of 16 where they will face the Oxford Brookes University 'B' boat. That race is scheduled to take place on Thursday at 11:15 a.m. EDT (4:15 p.m. in the U.K.).
Penn's Varsity Eight will row later that day, making its Henley debut when it faces Nottingham University in another Island Challenge Cup Round of 16 race at 1:30 p.m. EDT (6:30 p.m. in the U.K.). The Quakers' 'A' boat is considered one of the favorites for the Island Challenge Cup, which was won a year ago by Brown University.
