Women's Lacrosse Announces Team Captains For 2023-24

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania women's lacrosse team already has its eyes set on another deep postseason run in 2024, and it begins with announcing its captains for the upcoming year. The squad will be led by Niki Miles, Izzy Rohr, Maria Themelis, and Morgan Smith.

"We are excited to name our captains for the 2023-2024 season," Lois S. Leitner Head Coach Karin Corbett said. "Niki, Izzy, Morgan, and Maria inspire the team to work hard each day, to compete in all drills, to prepare for games, and to never quit. They believe in the tradition of this program and are out to prove something every day. They hold themselves and their teammates accountable yet create an atmosphere of family and fun."

Miles produced one of the most successful seasons in program history, scoring in all 19 games to total 78 points including a program-record 63 goals. She was named an All-American by USA Lacrosse Magazine and Inside Lacrosse, while earning First-Team All-Region honors by the IWLCA. She was the unanimous Ivy League Attacker of the Year and First-Team All-ivy.

Rohr joined that postseason success with Miles, just on the opposite side of the field. She was also named an All-American by both media outlets, as well as Second-Team All-Region by IWLCA. She was the unanimous Ivy League Defender of the Year and First-Team All-Ivy.

Themelis had a 16-game scoring streak rolling through most of the season, ramping up in the backend of the season including a career-high six goals in the Ivy League tournament championship against Yale to earn her Most Outstanding Player honors. A two-time Second-Team All-Ivy honoree, she ranked third on the team in scoring with 40 goals, marking her 14th in program history for a single season.

Although Smith missed this past season due to injury, she remained the energy on the sideline with her leadership and guidance. She returns in 2024 after a freshman season in 2022 where she started in all 13 games, finishing third on the team in ground balls (22) while adding nine caused turnovers and a draw control.

"We are excited for them to lead the 2023-2024 team to another championship."

The Quakers wrapped up the 2023 campaign as Ivy League champions, Ivy League tournament champions, earning a bid to the program's 16th NCAA Championship, and advancing to the second round. They finished with a 14-5 overall record including a perfect 7-0 tally in conference play.
