Falls Church, Va. - The United States Fencing Coaches Association (USFCA) recently handed out its 2023 Academic Awards, and the University of Pennsylvania men's and women's fencing programs were well represented, both as teams and individuals.
This year's USFCA All-Academic Team included 558 student-athletes with 360 receiving recognition as Scholars of Distinction. All-Academic Team honors are presented to those student-athletes at member institutions who had an in-season GPA of 3.3 or higher. Scholar of Distinction honors were presented to those student-athletes at member institutions who had an in-season GPA of 3.7 or higher.
Additionally, 13 men's teams received All-Academic recognition with Penn ranking 10th with a 3.44 GPA. 21 women's teams also received recognition with the Quakers' 3.68 GPA the seventh-best on the list.
Individually for the men, Arthur Andreev, Avery Townsend, David Park, Dennis Fleysh, Enzo Bergamo, Jackson Gold, Luke Zhang, Nicholas Molina, and Simon Kushkov were named to the All-Academic team – Andreev, Bergamo, Gold, and Zhang were all Scholars of Distinction.
For the women, Amber White, Chloe Daniel, Elizabeth Wang, Erica Wu, Grace Hao, Julia Thompson, Justina Lam, Kaitlyn Yang, Katina Proestakis Ortiz, Lenna Choi, Melanie Sporn, Sapphira Ching, Sarah Hilado, Talia Becker Calazans, Vivian Lu, and Yunice Pyo earned All-Academic merit – Scholars of Distinction honors went to Ching, Daniel, Hao, Hilado, Lu, Pyo, Sporn, Thompson, White, Wu, and Yang.
