NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sunday's series finale at Yale was a pitchers duel as the lone run in a 1-0 loss came on the final play of the game. The University of Pennsylvania softball team dropped its series final on Sunday at Yale as they managed just four singles in the entire game.
Kelly Zybura pitched six scoreless innings as she allowed just two hits and struck out three before allowing three straight singles to end the game in the bottom of the seventh.
FINAL: Yale 7, Penn 3
Zybura made the start for the Quakers in the series finale at Yale and had arguably her best outing of the year shutting out the Bulldogs on just two hits and three strikeouts over the first six innings. The home team stuck for three straight hits in the bottom of the seventh to end the game and complete the series sweep.
Brianna Brown had a game-best two hits on the day and stole her 15th consecutive base of the season in the top of the third. Brown's successful stolen base streak to open the season ended at 15 when she was caught stealing after leading off the fifth with an infield base hit.
The Quakers were unable to string together any hits as they managed just four hits, all singles and all in different innings. Neither team saw a runner advance past second until the winning run rounded third to end the game.
QUAKER NOTEMEAL
- Zybura has nine games in which she has pitched six or more innings and prior to today has allowed no less than seven hits. Today she scattered two hits over the first six innings before allowing three in the final inning.
- Brianna Brown has now reached base safely in 13 of her last 14 games.
- Brown extended her successful stolen base streak to a perfect 15-for-15 before the streak ended as she was caught stealing in the sixth inning. Brown moves up the single season stolen base leaderboard into a tie with Leah Allen (2015) for fourth most in a single season in program history. With 24 career stolen bases, Brown surpasses Sarah Schneider and into a tie with Elysse Gorney (2011-14) for ninth in program history.
- Sunday marked the first time in 2023 that the Quakers limited the opposition to just one run.
