ITHACA, N.Y. – The University of Pennsylvania women's tennis team earned its first Ivy League win of the season with a 4-2 victory over Cornell on Friday afternoon. This marks the second win over the Big Red in 2023 as Penn defeated Cornell 4-1 on the final day of the 2023 ECAC Women's Tennis Indoor Championships on February 12. With the win on Friday, the Quakers improve to 11-5 overall and 1-1 in the Ivy League. Penn is now 7-3 in its last 10 matches.
Eileen Wang and
Juliana Munhoz were paired up for the first time this season and opened the match with a 6-2 win at #1 doubles. Penn clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 victory at #3 doubles from the duo of
Gavriella Smith and
Saige Roshkoff, they are now 1-1 on the season in doubles play.
Iris Gallo and
Maya Urata were leading 6-5 when their match at #2 doubles was abandoned.
Urata opened singles play with her 10th win of the spring, earning a pair of 6-2 victories for the two-set win to give the visiting team a 2-0 lead. Wins at #4 and #1 singles by Cornell tied the match at 2-2.
Saige Roshkoff put the Quakers back in the lead for the final time as she won 7-5, and 6-4 for the 3-2 lead. Gallo lost her opening set 6-4 but bounced back to win the second and third set to clinch the 4-2 Ivy victory for the Quakers.
