Regular Season Concludes Wednesday as #12 Men's Lax Visits UAlbany

PHILADELPHIA – The No. 12 University of Pennsylvania men's lacrosse team is set to play its final game of the regular season Wednesday, traveling to the Empire State to take on UAlbany.

The Quakers are using Wednesday evening's matchup as a tune-up for the Ivy League Tournament next weekend, in which they clinched a spot as either the two or three seed against Cornell or Princeton next Friday night in New York City.

Penn has won three of its last four games including back-to-back games after beating Dartmouth Saturday, one week from topping Harvard by six goals in Cambridge.

The Penn-UAlbany Series
*Wednesday marks just the second matchup in series history between Penn and UAlbany. The Quakers were victorious on the road last season, 19-11.

In that contest, Ben Smith and Ben Bedard both had four goals each for the Quakers. Dylan Gergar had three assists on the day helping Penn take a 10-7 lead at the end of the second quarter.

Penn broadened the lead by scoring five goals in a row between the third and fourth quarters, two of which came from Smith and Bedard.

UAlbany managed a few last-minute goals, but they weren't enough to take back the game, despite scoring with time expiring in the fourth quarter.

Back-2-Back (Finally!)
*Penn's win against the Big Green on Saturday snapped a four-game losing streak following victories this season, going 0-4 during those games in 2023 until defeating Dartmouth, 17-6, at Franklin Field on Saturday. That's the first time the Quakers won back-to-back games.

The Last Time Out
*After holding Senior Day for its 17 seniors in the last game played at Franklin Field this season, Penn came out firing on all cylinders against Dartmouth in a 17-6 win.

The high-octane offense attacked quickly, leading 10-2 at halftime following an 8-1 run to kick off the afternoon. Three players—Cam Rubin, Ben Smith and Sam Handley scored four goals each during the game while Tynan Walsh led the team in assists with three while scoring a goal himself in the first quarter.

In net, Emmet Carroll allowed just three goals with 11 saves during the first three quarters of the game before senior Deven Varney played the final stanza, allowing only three goals while stopping four shots.

The victory marked the first time since 2019 the Quakers went 3-0 at home against Ivy opponents. That team went on to finish 6-0 in conference play, sealing the Ivy title and ran the table to win the Ivy League Tournament crown.

Triple Twenties
Three Quakers have 20 or more goals this season with Ben Smith (23), Sam Handley (22) and Cam Rubin (21). It's the fourth straight full season since 2018 (excluding 2020 and 2021) where three Penn players had 20 or more goals in a season. Handley has now scored 20 or more goals in three of his four seasons for the Quakers and Rubin matched his career-high for a campaign.

Keeping The Streak Alive
*Handley increased his point-scoring streak to 44 straight games with his six points (four goals and two assists) against Dartmouth. That number is good for fourth nationally. Handley has at least one point in every game he has played for Penn during his career, good for 182 points, ranking fourth in program history.

Four Away
*Speaking of Sam, the senior is just four goals away from becoming the eighth player in program history to register 100 career goals. He'd also be the second player this season to reach the milestone, joining Dylan Gergar. Handley is also tied for fifth all-time in career assists (86) and took over fourth in program history in points (182), passing John Ward '98 against Dartmouth last weekend.

The Baker's Dozen
*After scoring 17 goals in a win over Dartmouth, Penn is now 4-0 when scoring more than 13 goals this season. The Quakers also scored 13 goals against Saint Joseph's, 17 against Yale and 15 against Harvard.
