NEW YORK – The University of Pennsylvania softball team dropped a 5-4 contest in the series finale at Columbia on Saturday. The Quakers took the lead twice and tied the game at 4-4 but could not push across a third go ahead run. Columbia used an RBI double in the sixth inning to take a 5-4 lead and held on for the win.
Dana Anderson reached base all four times she came to the plate. She went a game-best 3-for-3 with a walk, two RBI, and two runs scored.
Brianna Brown was a 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored.
FINAL: Columbia 5, Penn 4
Dana Anderson got the Quakers on the board early as she belted a two-out solo shot over the left field wall to give Penn a 1-0 lead. Her second of the season.
The Lions tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the first on a sac fly.
Fiorentino induced an inning ending double play to end the second inning as
Dani Freer caught a line drive and doubled the runner at first off.
Anderson gave the Quakers their second lead of the game with an RBI base hit up the middle to score
Brianna Brown from second.
Columbia took a 4-2 lead with one out in the fourth inning on a two-run shot to right field.
Dana Anderson opened the fifth inning with her third hit of the day as she single through the left side. With one out, Fiorentino walked and
Delaney Smith sent a pinch hit base hit through the right side to load the bases.
Katie Reagan reentered to run at first. A wild pitch by the Lion brought the Quakers within one. After a groundout for the second out, Bauerle kept the inning alive as she reached on an error that allowed Anderson to score and tied the game at 4-4.
Columbia led off the sixth with an infield base hit off
Kelly Zybura and the next batter gave the home team a 5-4 lead on an RBI double with no outs.
The Quakers saw the lead off batter reach base for four straight innings from the second to fifth innings.
QUAKER NOTEMEAL
- Dana Anderson collected three hits for the first time since she was 3-for-5 in the second game of a doubleheader sweep at UMES. She scored a season best two runs on Saturday.
- Anderson hit her second homer of the season, her first since the season opener against James Madison.
UP NEXT
The Red and Blue are on the road at Drexel on Wednesday with a first pitch at 4 p.m. The Quakers are back home next weekend for their final home Ivy series as they host Brown on April 22-23. First pitch for both days is set for 12:30 p.m.
