Strong Pitching Leads Softball to Doubleheader Split at Columbia

NEW YORK – The University of Pennsylvania softball team won its second Ivy League game of the season in a doubleheader split at Columbia on Friday. The Quakers were held scoreless in an eight-inning affair as the Lions used a walk off base hit for a 1-0 win. The visiting team opened the second game with three runs in the first inning as it cruised to a 7-0 victory.

Three Penn pitchers combined to limit the Columbia offense to one run on seven hits while striking out six and walking one in 14.1 innings of work on Friday afternoon. Game one was a scoreless duel until the final at-bat as Kelly Zybura struck out three while allowing one run on four hits in 7.1 innings pitched.

In the second game, Payton Bean made the start and got the first out before Bella Fiorentino took over for the remainder of the game. Fiorentino picked up the win while pitching a scoreless 6.2 innings as she scattered three hits and three strikeouts for her first victory of the season.

The Quakers have their first chance to win an Ivy League series on Saturday morning with a win.

Penn put runners on first and third with one out as Dani Freer hit an field base hit and Landow advanced to third on the play. That was all the Quakers could manage as the next two batters fouled out and grounded out.

Columbia led off the bottom of the eighth with a double to left and after the first out a pinch hit RBI base hit down the left line scored the winning run.

The Quakers opened the second game scoring three runs all with two outs in the top of the first. With two outs and runners on first and second, Bella Fiorentino laced an RBI double that scored Freer for a 1-0 Penn lead.
