PHILADELPHIA – The Ivy League has announced its
2022-23 All-Ivy teams in men's basketball, and the University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team had two players honored. Junior guard
Jordan Dingle was named the Ivy League Player of the Year and for the second straight year was a unanimous selection as first-team All-Ivy, while fellow junior
Max Martz earned honorable mention All-Ivy recognition.
Dingle is the 15th different player in program history to earn Ivy League Player of the Year honors, and just the fifth to do so in his junior season along with Paul Little (1981-82), Jerome Allen (1993-94), Ugonna Onyekwe (2001-02), and Ibrahim Jaaber (2005-06). He also is one of six players to be named both Ivy League Rookie of the Year and Ivy League Player of the Year during his career, joining Onyekwe and Little along with Ron Haigler, Keven McDonald and Michael Jordan. Finally, Dingle is the 19th player in program history to earn first-team All-Ivy honors multiple times.
Already ninth on Penn's all-time scoring list with a season still to play, Dingle has had another record-shattering season offensively. The junior has scored 637 points in 27 games this season, a 23.6 scoring average that is second nationally behind only Detroit Mercy's Antoine Davis. Dingle's 637 points are the second-most in a season in program history, behind Ernie Beck's 673 in 1952-53. Dingle has 22 games with 20 or more points this season—second behind Beck, who had 25 such games in 1952-53—and his streak of double-figure scoring games is at 36 dating back to last season, the fifth-longest streak in program history. Dingle has hit 76 three-point shots this season, tied for sixth on Penn's single-season list, and his 143 made free throws are ninth on the Quakers' single-season list. He also leads the team with 30 steals this season and is third with 57 assists.
Martz, meanwhile, is the 44th player in program history to earn honorable mention recognition and the first since Devon Goodman in 2019-20. This is Martz' first All-Ivy honor with the Quakers. The junior forward finished the regular season as Penn's third-leading scorer at 11.0 points per game, but he was second among Penn players in Ivy play averaging 11.6 ppg. Martz reached double figures in the scoring column eight times in Ivy play this season, including each of Penn's last three games (18 each vs. Brown and Dartmouth, 13 last Saturday at Princeton). He knocked down 17 three-pointers in Ivy play this season, second behind Dingle on the team, and was third among Quaker players in rebounds per game (4.9).
Dingle is one of four unanimous selections to the All-Ivy first team along with Princeton senior forward Tosan Evbuomwan, Harvard senior forward Chris Ledlum, and Yale junior forward Matt Knowling. They are joined on the first team by Brown sophomore guard Kino Lilly, Jr. Princeton guard Caden Pierce was voted the Ivy League Rookie of the Year, while Yale sophomore guard Bez Mbeng was named the Defensive Player of the Year. Yale head coach James Jones was voted by his peers as the Ivy League Coach of the Year.
In addition to the All-Ivy teams, the Ivy League announced the Academic All-Ivy selections in men's basketball and Penn is represented this season by senior forward
Lucas Monroe.
Penn is 17-12 overall and will be the third seed for this weekend's Ivy League Tournament at Princeton's Jadwin Gym after going 9-5 in Ivy play. The Red and Blue face second-seeded Princeton on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in a game that will air nationally on ESPNU. Top-seeded Yale and fourth-seeded Cornell meet in Saturday's first semifinal, at 11 a.m., and then Saturday's winners will play in the #IvyMadness Championship Game on Sunday at noon to determine the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. That game will air nationally on ESPN2.
