DURHAM, N.C. –
Isaac Herbst,
Simon Kushkov, and
Davide Lorenzoni all earned second-team All-America honors as the University of Pennsylvania men's fencing team wrapped competition Friday at the NCAA Championships.
As a group, the Quakers won 57 bouts over Thursday and Friday, good for sixth place. Notre Dame, Columbia, Princeton, Ohio State, and St. John's occupied the top five spots while the Red and Blue finished ahead of Keystone State rival Penn State (7th), plus Ivy League foes Harvard (8th) and Yale (10th).
In epee, Herbst finished the competition with 14 wins in 23 bouts, taking seventh place, with weapon-mate
Avery Townsend taking 17th after a nine-win performance. Kushkov, the lone male Quaker sabreist at the Championships, finished the event with 12 wins in 21 bouts, taking sixth place. Freshman
Davide Lorenzoni took sixth place in foil with 14 wins in 23 bouts and weapon-mate
Blake Broszus won eight bouts, finishing in 18th.
Herbst joins his older brother,
Eliot Herbst, who was honorable mention All-American at last season's Championships.
The women are slated to begin their portion of Championships weekend tomorrow morning, with the final round-robin rounds, semifinals and finals all happening on Sunday.
