PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania softball team returned home for the first time this season and opened Ivy League play against the Crimson of Harvard on Saturday. The Quakers, still searching for their first win of the season, managed just one run in the doubleheader.
Madison Bauerle went 3-for-3 in the second game as she had three of Penn's four hits.
FINAL: Harvard 6, Penn 0
Harvard jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and added two more in the fourth and another run in the fifth inning to take the first game 6-0.
The Quaker bats managed just a trio of hits in the loss as
Julia Mortimer collected a double in the second inning,
Delaney Smith had a base hit in the fourth and
Dana Anderson hit a single to left field.
Kelly Zybura made the start and went 3.2 innings allowing four earned runs on eight hits and two walks.
Payton Bean entered in the top of the fourth with two outs and got a fly ball to left to end the threat. In the top of the fifth she allowed just a single run on a pair of hits as she got the back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning. She sat down a third straight batter on a strikeout to start the top of to the sixth.
FINAL/6: Harvard 9, Penn 1
The top of the first inning of the second game started just as the first game started with the Crimson jumping out to a 3-0 lead. Harvard scored on three-straight at-bats – a double to left center, a base hit to third, and a groundout to the pitcher.
It wasn't till the bottom of the third inning before the Quakers got something going as
Madison Bauerle hit a two-out base hit to center field and scored on
Sarah Schneider's RBI double to the left field wall. This cut the Harvard lead to 3-1.
Harvard responded quickly in the top of the fourth as the first three batters reached and two runs scored. The Crimson added another run with a one-out RBI base hit to center to make it a 6-1 game.
The visitors added three more runs over the fifth and sixth innings with two in the fifth and one in the sixth. They worked around a pair of base runners, including runners on second and third with one out to hold on for the run-rule victory.

- Madison Bauerle went 3-for-3 with a trio of base hits including two up the middle in game two.
- Payton Bean made her first appearance of the season in game one. In 3.1 innings pitched she allowed just one run on two hits while walking two and striking out three batters.

The Red and Blue are set to close out the Harvard series on Sunday with a 12:30 p.m. first pitch.
