TULSA, Okla. – The University of Pennsylvania wrestling team saw its season come to an end on the second day of the 2023 NCAA Championships in Tulsa at BOK Center. Penn entered the second day with four wrestlers fighting for All-American status.
Michael Colaiocco and
Doug Zapf both earned wins on the day to advance through the consolation brackets.
Ryan Miller and
Ben Goldin lost their only bout of the day.
Miller opened the day for the Quakers against Jack Medley of Michigan and used and escape in the first period to cut the deficit to 6-1. Entering the second period, Miller got an escape to put the score at 8-2 but a takedown in the late stages of the period put his opponent up 10-2. Halfway through the third period Miller looked to get back into the bout as he earned a takedown to make it 10-4 but Medley got two points for a reversal and added a point for riding time to earn the major decision, 13-4.
Colaiocco wasted no time getting his second pin of the championship as he earned another first-period fall to advance in the consolation bracket. His next bout pitted him against Northern Iowa's Kyle Biscoglia. Colaiocco earned a takedown with six seconds left in the first period and after the opening period, he led 2-1. Just 12 seconds into the second period, he used a reversal to take a 4-1 lead but that lead was short-lived as the period ended tied 4-4. Biscoglia held off Colaiocco's comeback attempt as he got an escape and a takedown to earn the 7-4 decision.
Both of Zapf's bouts on Friday ended with a 3-2 score. In the first bout, Zapf took a 1-0 lead into the third period following a second-period escape. After an escape by his opponent from Iowa State tied the bout at 1-1, Zapf took back the lead with a takedown and staved off elimination as he allowed just a single point over the final minute to take a 3-2 win by decision. His second bout of the day paired him against Caleb Henson of Virginia Tech. Zapf tied the bout at 1-1 in the third period but nearly 30 seconds later Henson got a takedown to lead 3-1. Zapf season came to an end as he lost by a 3-2 decision.
Goldin faced SIU Edwardsville's Colton McKiernan and put pressure on him early. The bout remained scoreless through the first period and a second-period escape gave his opponent a 1-0 lead entering the third period. McKiernan held off the pressure from Goldin as he built up his riding time to earn the extra point and the 2-0 decision.
