REGIONAL RESULTS
EASTON, Pa. – The University of Pennsylvania men's and women's fencing teams completed NCAA Regional competition on the campus of Lafayette College on Saturday with 11 athletes putting themselves in strong contention for qualification for the NCAA Championships at Duke March 23-26.
Penn placed at least one top four finisher and two top 10 finishers in five of the six weapons.
For the men,
Blake Broszus took third in foil after finishing 12th last year, with
Davide Lorenzoni (sixth) and
Eric Yu (eighth) also making the top 10. Freshmen
Simon Kushkov and
Avery Townsend took second and third in sabre and épée, respectively.
After taking 21st in last year's regional, Hailey Lu finished seventh in women's sabre, one spot ahead of teammate Vivian Lu. Jessica Liang took fourth in women's épée after finishing last year's regional in 16
th, with weapon-mate Shirley Guo finishing in eighth. Katina Proestakis Ortiz finished third in women's foil after taking 11th last year. Sabrina Cho finished fifth for the second straight regional.
The regional finishes count for 60 percent of a fencer's qualification to the NCAA Championships, with regular season results accounting for 40 percent.
An announcement in the coming days will reveal all of this year's Championship participants. The Mid-Atlantic/South region will be allocated seven spots in every weapon except for men's épée, where it will be allocated six. All six weapons will have two national at-large spots each.
