PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania women's tennis team has received the #2 seed for the 2023 ECAC Division I Women's Indoor Tennis Championship set to begin on Friday against the #7 seed Brown. The three-day championship will take place at the Boss Tennis Center on the campus of Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H.

Penn and Brown are meeting for the fourth time in the ECAC championships. The Quakers hold a 2-1 advantage over the Bears, including winning the previous two meetings in 2019 and 2022. Overall the Red and Blue are on a four-match win streak, including a trio of 4-0 wins. Penn and Brown will meet again in 2023 for its annual Ivy League matchup on April 16 in University City.
Penn concluded a four-match homestand with a perfect 4-0 record to open the 2023 season with wins over Delaware and LIU. The opening match of the week was the closes match of the season for Penn, the Blue Hens opened the dual earning the doubles point but four singles victories helped the Quakers gain the edge on Delaware.
Sabine Rutlauka clinched the 4-3 victory for Penn as she won the tiebreaker in the second set. The final match of the week and homestand was more of a one-sided affair as the Red and Blue earned a 6-1 victory over LIU. A pair of identical 6-1 doubles victories helped Penn jump out to a 1-0 lead. The Quakers opened singles play with a win by freshman
Maya Urata and after LIU picked up its only win on the afternoon, it was all Penn the rest of the way.
Gavriella Smith used a two-set victory to clinch the match for Penn at No. 3 singles to keep the Quakers record undefeated on the season.
Brown is coming off a pair of 7-0 shutouts last weekend against Providence and Colgate. Brown went 3-0 in doubles action in both matches. The Bears made easy work of their opponents, winning all 12 singles points in two sets each.
