#21 Wrestling Drops Close Battle at #5 Cornell, 19-15

ITHACA, N.Y.  – The 21st-ranked University of Pennsylvania wrestling team battled a tough opponent in #5 Cornell on Sunday afternoon in the Friedman Wrestling Center. The teams traded decision wins through the opening six bouts but a pair of bonus point wins for the Big Red helped seal their 19-15 victory and the Ivy League title.

The opening five bouts were a back-and-fourth battle between the Quakers and the Big Red. #24 Ryan Miller opened the day with a 6-1 win over #17 Brett Unger, in the first of six bouts featuring two ranked opponents. After an escape by Miller in the second period was the only point of the bout, he took control in the final period with a crucial takedown and added the extra point for riding time. #3 Victor Arajau defeated #7 Michael Colaiocco 13-7 to tie the dual at 3-3. Carmen Ferrante put the Quakers back on top with a 4-1 win over #17 Vince Cornella at 141 pounds. The Big Red tied the dual again with an 8-3 win by #1 Yianni Diakomihalis over #10 Doug Zapf. #12 Anthony Artalona closed out the first half with a 3-2 victory to give Penn a 9-6 lead.

The Big Red opened the second half with back-to-back wins at 165 and 174 to take their first lead of the afternoon. A fall for Cornell's #4 Chris Foca at 174 gave the home team a 15-9 advantage. Maximus Hale earned his first win over a top-10 opponent with a 10-3 decision over #6 Jonathan Loew to pull Penn within three. The Big Red got those points and then some back with a #14 Jacob Cardenas major decision over #30 Cole Urbas. #29 Ben Goldin closed out the dual with a 3-1 decision in sudden victory.
