SERIES AGAINST LOYOLA
*The Quakers are meeting the Greyhounds for the 23rd time in program history, as Loyola has won 18 of the outings and the last 16.
Â
*Penn is looking for its first win on Loyola's home turf since March 15, 1988, when they edged out the Greyhounds, 3-2.
Â
*In 22 matchups, the Quakers have scored 150 goals.
Â
LAST TIME WE MET
*The two squads battled in their last two matchups at Franklin Field, including last year's tight 12-10 decision for Loyola.
Â
*In a similar ranked matchup where Penn was No. 24 and Loyola was No. 9 at that point in the early-season clash, both squads found themselves knotted up at 4-4 at the half. The Greyhounds came out with a 5-2 third quarter to push a comfortable advantage, but the Quakers stormed back with four goals in the last frame to come up just short.
Â
*
Aly Feeley led all Penn scorers with a career-high four goals in six shots.
Kennon Moon added two goals.
Â
*The Quakers commanded the draw, winning 18 of the 26, including six in each of the final two quarters.
Kaitlyn Cumiskey and Moon combined for 15 of the draw controls.
Â
*Loyola was led by Livy Rosenzweig and Sydni Black, combining for nine points and seven goals. Â
Â
ABOUT THE GREYHOUNDS
*Loyola also enters the game with a 2-0 record so far this season, sporting a similar foe in its season opener. On February 18, the Greyhounds started the campaign with a 12-10 home victory over then-No. 18 Johns Hopkins.
Â
*Last Wednesday, they added their second win at Towson, 16-5, as Loyola's first three games of the season are all in Baltimore.
Â
*Averaging 14 goals per game on a .538 shooting percentage, the Greyhounds are led by Black with nine points on seven goals and two assists. She is 3-for-4 on free-position shots, while winning six draws, forcing three turnovers, and scooping two ground balls.
Â
*Working the 'x' is Emily Wills, commanding the offense with a team-high six assists to go with two goals for eight points.
Â
*Between the pipes, Lauren Spence has started both games and tended for all but four minutes, making 18 saves for a 6.76 goals-against average.
Â
*Prior to the season, Katie Detwiler and Jillian Wilson were named to the Tewaaraton Award watch list. Additionally, the Patriot League announced Georgia Latch Preseason Attacker of the Year, Wilson the Preseason Midfielder of the Year, and Detweiler the Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.
Â
PENN'S LAST TIME OUT
*Last Saturday night was nothing less than unforgettable for the Quakers, overcoming a three-goal deficit in the fourth quarter to then-No. 16 Johns Hopkins on the road to tie the game up at the horn and win in overtime, 13-12.
Â
*With less than two minutes in the game, a Blue Jays' 12-11 lead, and they had the ball, senior
Izzy Rohr stepped in to draw the charge with 33 seconds remaining to give Penn an opportunity. However, a failed clear put the ball back with Hopkins on the near sideline. Hard defensive pressure by the Quakers with eight seconds left saw Penn get a stick on a pass up the field, the ball hitting the official in the head and roll to the ground, and sophomore
Anna Brandt heading the other direction. Quickly finding sophomore
Erika Chung inside the eight-meter fan, Chung rifled in the shot at the buzzer to send the game to overtime.
Â
*Winning the opening draw to start the extra six minutes, the Quakers never let the Blue Jays see the ball again as Brandt was awarded a free-position attempt on the right side of the fan where she sent it home for the victory.
Â
*Sophomore
Bella Kehoe led the team with a career-high four goals, while freshman
Patricia Columbia-Walsh had four points on a goal and three assists.
Â
*Senior
Kelly Van Hoesen earned the win in the net, making seven saves in 62 minutes of work.
Â
QUAKER NOTES
*A typical Penn lacrosse schedule, the team is lined up for a competitive 2023 campaign that includes seven top-25 opponents according to the IWLCA preseason ranking. Kicking off their five-game road trip with a victory at then-No. 16 Johns Hopkins and Wednesday evening's game at No. 8 Loyola, they still have No. 24 Jacksonville in the stretch. They'll also take on #7 Florida on the road, while hosting #5 Maryland, #22 Yale, and #15 Princeton.
Â
*The matchups against Jacksonville and Florida will be the first trips for the Quakers to the Sunshine State in program history. Â
Â
*Penn returns nine of its top 10 scorers from last season, six of whom had 20-plus points led by senior Miles with 34 (15 goals, 19 assists).
Â
* Brandt returns after a successful first season in 2022, playing in all 15 games and leading the team in scoring. Brandt paced the offense with 24 goals, and opened the first game this season with five before adding three more points against Hopkins including the game-tying assist and game-winning goal in overtime.
Â
*The Quakers return their three top draw specialists as well. Moon had the team lead of 78 last year, while Brandt (44) and Cumiskey (35) combined for 79 more.
Â
*The freshman presence is already being felt on the team, as Penn is being led in points through two games by Columbia-Walsh with nine points. Her first collegiate game against La Salle saw her score twice with three assists, and followed it up against Hopkins with four more points on a goal and three assists.
Â
*Head coachÂ
Karin Corbett is in her 24th season at the helm, owning 242 of the program's 395 wins.
