HANOVER, N.H. – After two matches in two days were both halted after four singles matches, the University of Pennsylvania men's tennis team battled Cornell to the final match of the afternoon on Sunday at the ECAC Indoor Championship, falling by a score of 4-3 in the battle for third place.
For the third straight day, the doubles point came down to the third and final match, with Cornell eventually coming out on top, taking the 1-0 lead;
Edoardo Graziani and
Kevin Zhu, the #2 team in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings, remained unbeaten in dual match play with a 6-2 win.
Manfredi Graziani got Penn off to a strong start in singles, taking his match in straight sets. Older brother Edoardo followed suit with a straight-set win of his own, putting Penn in front, 2-1. After Cornell took the lead back at 3-2,
Aditya Gupta won his match in three sets, knotting things at three matches apiece with one to play.
After a razor-close opening two sets both went to tiebreakers, Zhu fell in the third set of the winner-take-all contest, as Cornell claimed the match's decisive point.
