HANOVER, N.H. – The University of Pennsylvania women's tennis team closed out the 2023 ECAC Women's Tennis Indoor Championships with a 4-1 win over Cornell on Sunday morning. The Quakers picked up the doubles point, and the final two singles wins to clinch seventh place in Hanover on Sunday.
The Quakers opened the match earning the doubles point.
Maya Urata and
Iris Gallo opened the match with a 6-1 win over Fatima El Ashram and Tanya Fan and then Penn clinched the doubles point as
Eileen Wang and
Gavriella Smith posted a 6-1 win over Alexandra Savu and Sofia Iantosca.
Rutaluka made easy work of her singles opponent, as she defeated Lan Mi 6-0 and 6-1 to give Penn the early 2-0 lead. The Big Red picked up their only team point with a 6-0 and 6-1 win at No. 2 singles. Penn wins by Urata and
Gavriella Smith guided the Quakers to the 4-1 win over the Big Red. Urata won 6-3 and 6-4 defeating Fatima El Ashram before Smith clinched the match with 6-2 and 6-4 wins over Emma Baker. While her match did not finish, freshman
Claire Zhang made her Penn debut today as she led 2-1 when her match was ended due to the clinching point coming on another court.
Penn and Cornell are set to meet again this season for its annual Ivy League match up on April 7 in Ithaca, N.Y.
