ITHACA, N.Y. – The University of Pennsylvania men's and women's fencing teams completed the opening day of action at the 2023 Ivy League Round-Robins on Saturday. The men were on the strips twice, falling to Harvard and Columbia. The women competed against three teams, going 1-2, with a victory over Cornell sandwiched around defeats at the hands of Columbia and Princeton.
Opening the event with Harvard, the men picked up three wins in epee and four in foil but were shut out in sabre. Following the Crimson with Columbia, the Red and Blue picked up three wins in sabre and four in foil, but the Lions took eight of nine bouts in epee to close out the win.
Men's foilist
Blake Broszus finished the day in sixth place after four wins in six bouts, with
Davide Lorenzoni one spot behind him. Sabreist
Simon Kushkov finished the day in a tie for ninth after a pair of wins, and
Isaac Herbst finished the day in 11th after a pair of wins in epee.
Women's foilist
Katina Proestakis Ortiz will enter Sunday in second place after winning seven of nine bouts; weaponmate
Sabrina Cho won five of her nine bouts and currently sits in 11th place. Sabreist
Vivian Lu ended Saturday in sixth place following five wins in nine bouts. The epeeists will enter Sunday with a pair in the top 10, with
Jessica Liang in eighth place after a five-win Saturday and
Chloe Daniel in 10th place after a four-win day.
The Round-Robins will wrap tomorrow with the women competing in three more matches and the men competing in two more.
