PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania women's tennis team suffered its first loss of the season as it fell 4-0 to Brown in the opening round of the 2023 ECAC Women's Tennis Indoor Championships on Friday evening. The Quakers picked up one doubles win but it was not enough as the Bears took the match 4-0. Penn will face Yale in the second round at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
Brown opened the match with victory at No. 2 doubles and as the two teams simultaneously clinched wins at No. 1 and 3 doubles, Brown clinched the doubles point.
The Bears quickly clinched the three necessary singles wins to advance in the bracket with singles wins at No. 2, 4, and 6. Singles play was dominated by the Bears as
Sabine Rutlauka's 6-3 win in set one was the only singles set Penn was victorious.
Penn and Brown will meet again this season for its annual Ivy League match up on April 16 in University City.
