Wrestling Hits the Mats Twice this Weekend; Hosts #3 Iowa, Heads to Patriot Open

PHILADELPHIA – The No. 19 University of Pennsylvania wrestling team has a busy weekend on deck, opening dual meet action against Iowa on Friday at 7 p.m. and then traveling to the Patriot Open on Sunday.

Penn took first place at the PRTC Keystone Classic, with Max Gallagher (125), Alex Almeyda (133), CJ Composto (141), and Nick Incontrera (174) winning the titles in their weight classes. Michael Colaiocco (133), Kelly Dunnigan (149), Jude Swisher (157), Maximus Hale (184), and Martin Cosgrove (197) all grabbed the third-place bouts to complete the Red and Blue's reign at Keystone.

Quakers in the Rankings
Eight Quakers head into the weekend ranked in the top 32 of their weight classes, with No. 8 Colaiocco (133) leading the pack. No. 10 Incontrera (174), No. 11 Composto (141), No. 19 Gallagher (125), No. 24 Dunnigan (149), No. 26 Swisher (157), No. 26 Cosgrove (197), and No. 32 Hale (184) even out Penn's presence in the rankings.

It's Been How Long?
Iowa has not competed in The Palestra since the 2001-02 season when head coach Roger Reina was in his first stint at the helm of the program. It may have been 22 years since Iowa has been in the House of Philly wrestling, but these two teams met last season in Iowa City, with the Hawkeyes taking the meet 26-11. Ryan Miller, Colaiocco, and Carmen Ferrante '23 won their bouts against Iowa to account for the Quakers' points in the meet.

Iowa has eight wrestlers ranked in the top 25 of their weight classes, including the No. 1 grappler in the country at 141 pounds, Real Woods, and the No. 2 wrestler at 157 pounds, Jared Franek. No. 6 Michael Caliendo (165), No. 10 Victor Voinovich (149), No. 10 Gabe Arnold (174), No. 12 Brody Teske (133), No. 14 Drake Ayala (125), and No. 24 Zach Glazier (197) round out the Hawkeyes in the polls.

Patriot Open Field
No. 2 NC State, No. 4 Cornell, No. 9 Virginia Tech, No. 13 South Dakota State, No. 24 Lock Haven, No. 29 Maryland, American, Appalachian State, Bucknell, Campbell, Columbia, Davidson, George Mason, LIU, Morgan State, Navy, Rider, Virginia, VMI, and West Virginia join the Red and Blue in Fairfax.
