PHILADELPHIA – It's good to be home. The University of Pennsylvania wrestling team grabbed the PRTC Keystone Classic team title at The Palestra on Sunday night.
Max Gallagher (125),
Alex Almeyda (133), No. 12
CJ Composto (141), and No. 14
Nick Incontrera (174) won the individual titles in their respective weight classes to lead Penn to the team victory with 178.5 points.
Gallagher defeated fellow Quaker No. 20
Ryan Miller in the 125 pounds final round by decision, 4-1. The freshman made his quest to the final with a 4-1 victory by decision over No. 29 Indiana's Michael Spangler in the quarterfinal bout. Gallagher tallied a takedown in the third period to secure the win and a spot in the semifinal round to battle No. 9 Virginia Tech's Eddie Ventresca. A minute into his bout with Ventresca, the Hokie recorded a takedown, but Gallagher prevailed with back-to-back escapes in the first and second periods to get on the board. The Quaker went on to takedown the 2023 All-American in the third to force sudden victory, then recorded another takedown 22 seconds into the extra period to head to the final round. Gallagher went on to top the No. 20 wrestler in the country in Miller by decision of 4-1 to win his first bracket for the Quakers.
Fellow freshman Almeyda kept the streak going for the Penn first-years, winning the 133 pound finals by a decision, 3-2. In the round of 16, Almeyda won his bout against Logan Frazier (Virginia Tech) by an 8-0 major decision. Almeyda took Frazier down in the first and third to send himself to the quarterfinal round, where he beat App State's Ethan Oakley by decision 2-1. Almeyda kept his momentum going in his semifinal bout, taking down Franklin & Marshall's Mason Leiphart twice to win 6-0 by decision. The freshman secured Penn's second final win of the day with a hard-fought bout against Utah Valley's Haiden Drury. Almeyda hit Drury with a reversal at the beginning of the third before riding time to the end of the round to come out on top 3-2.
No. 12 Composto continued Penn's reign, grabbing a 4-2 win by decision to claim the 141 pound title. Composto started his day with a tech fall victory over Duke's Peter Chacon in 3:45. The sophomore tallied 11 points in the first period to secure the 15-0 win. Composto kept it rolling in the quarterfinal round, winning 9-2 by decision over Mac Church (Virginia Tech). Composto hit Church with two takedowns in the first and held his lead to secure a spot in the semifinals, where he went on to win by major decision, 11-3. Composto overcame Indiana's Cole Rhemrev with nine points from takedowns to move on to the final. In his closest bout of the day, Composto didn't tally a takedown on the Hoosiers' Danny Fongaro till the third, but it was enough to claim the title by decision 4-2.
No. 14 Incontrera won the Quakers' final individual title by major decision, 16-3, over University City foe Jasiah Queen (Drexel). Incontrera started his day the same way he ended it, with a victory by major decision. The junior took down Virginia Tech's Kolton Clark four different times throughout the round of 16 bout to win 18-8. Incontrera stayed hot, winning his quarterfinal round over Drexel's Tanner Updegraff in 1:33 with a fall. There was no slowing the New Jersey native down as he recorded another tech fall in three minutes over Duke's Jack Wimmer. The bout only lasted one period, with Incontrera recording three straight nearfalls to clinch his spot in the finals. Queen opened the final bout with a takedown, but that would be the only point he scored in the match. Incontrera tallied eight quick points in the first with an escape, takedown, and nearfall to start his rally. He took down Queen two more times in the final two periods to clinch the 174 title with a 16-3 win.
