COLUMBUS, Ohio – The nationally ranked University of Pennsylvania men's and women's fencing teams competed in the final meet of the fall campaign at the Elite Invitational hosted by Ohio State University on Sunday.
Ranked No. 7 in the United States Fencing Coaches' Association (USFCA) poll, the women ended the day 3-2, grabbing statement wins over top-15 teams. The No. 7 ranked men had a successful outing, ending the day 3-1, with one of the victories coming from a bout with No. 1 program in the nation.
The women's squad opened the invite with wins over No. 5 Northwestern and No. 14 Stanford. The Quakers edged out the Wildcats, 14-13, before topping the Cardinal, 15-12. The women capped off the day with another top-15 win over No. 15 Air Force. The Red and Blue stifled the Falcons, 19-8, to close out fall meets.
The men started their day in the Buckeye State with a 15-12 victory over No. 1 Notre Dame after winning the foil bouts, 6-3. The Quakers kept the momentum going, topping Stanford, 16-11, and then Air Force, 16-11, to wrap up the fall slate.
Both squads return to the piste on January 14 at the Penn State Invitational.
