Women’s Tennis Completes ITA Northeast Regionals

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The University of Pennsylvania women's tennis wrapped up the ITA Northeast Regionals hosted by Columbia in New York City on Sunday afternoon.

Penn made deep runs into the round of 16 in both the singles and doubles portion of the regionals, with Iris Gallo competing in both rounds of 16.
 
In the singles, four Quakers had byes in the round of 128, while Saige Roshkoff and Maya Urata won their first matchups to move on. Urata, Gallo, and Roshkoff beat familiar foes in Princeton and Drexel to advance to the round of 32. Gallo went on to edge out Eva Elbaz of Princeton 6-3, 2-6, 11-9 to fight for a spot in the quarterfinals during the round of 16. Ultimately, the senior fell 6-0, 6-4 to Temple's Maiko Uchijima.
 
The Red and Blue had three doubles teams competing in the regionals, with Esha Velaga and Urata and Gallo and Eileen Wang having byes in the round of 64. Gavriella Smith and Liza Tkachenko took down Aina Plana Ventosa and Anastasia of Seton Hall 8-4 to move to the round of 32 with their teammates. Gallo and Wang defeated Naomi Karki and Michae Kim from Rutgers 8-7, 7-3, while Velaga and Urata crushed Lehigh's Anushka Dania and Megha Dania 8-6 to make a push toward the next round. Penn's time at the ITA Northeast Regionals came to a close in the round of 16 as both doubles pairs fell in close matches, with Gallo and Wang forcing an extra round with Nicoline Sartz-Lunde and Willa Bay Breunich of Saint John's (8-7, 8-6).
