Women’s Tennis Gears Up for ITA Northeast Regionals

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania women's tennis team is heading to New York City this weekend for the ITA Northeast Regionals hosted by Columbia.
 
Penn is sending eight Quakers and the maximum number of entries to the city to participate in the tournament running from Friday to Sunday. The Northeast Regionals is the qualifying round for the Super Regionals hosted by Army Oct. 20-22. Junior Gavriella Smith and Freshman Esha Velaga have already earned spots in the ITA Super Regional, announced back on September 27.
 
Three members of the Red and Blue went to Cary, N.C., last weekend for the ITA All-American Championships. Smith, Iris Gallo, and Maya Urata all grabbed wins on the final day of the championships, with Smith defeating Sophie Zehender of Wyoming 7-6 (6), 6-3, and Gallo and Urata grabbing an 8-4 doubles victory over Furman's Maeve Thornton and Grace Thomson.
