Women Pick Up Two Top-15 Wins As Fencing Competes At Tri-State Shark Showcase

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The University of Pennsylvania men's and women's fencing teams each faced some of the best from New York and Connecticut Sunday afternoon at the Tri-State Shark Showcase, hosted by Long Island University (LIU).

The women, #10 in the United States Fencing Coaches' Association (USFCA) mid-season poll, won all four of their matches, winning at least 19 bouts in all four. The team opened the day with a 20-7 win over #15 St. John's, with the epeeists and foilists each winning seven bouts. The Quakers then beat the host Sharks 20-7 with the epeeists winning eight of nine bouts. The team's penultimate match of the day was an Ivy Round-Robins preview against #8 Yale, ending in a 19-8 Penn win with the foilists taking eight of nine bouts. The Red and Blue closed the day with a 26-1 drubbing of Hunter.

On the men's side, the #10 Quakers opened the day with a tough 16-11 loss to St. John's despite eight wins from the foilists. The team bounced back with a 20-7 win over LIU, both the epeeists and foilists winning eight bouts in that match. After a close 15-12 loss to #9 Yale, the team ended its day knocking off Hunter, 27-0, the first such win for the program since January 12, 2014 against Drew.

The teams next hit the strips February 11 and 12 for the Ivy Round-Robins, hosted by Cornell.
