PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania fencing teams wrapped a successful Philadelphia Invitational Sunday, squaring off with some of the top teams in the country at the Tse Center.
One day after helping Young Family Head Coach of Fencing Any Ma surpass 500 career wins, the women started strong with a commanding win over Temple, then followed that up with another victory over Wayne State. The Quakers eventually dropped their final three matches of the day, most notably a 14-13 final to Northwestern to wrap their weekend.
For the men, the Red and Blue opened their day with a win over Wayne State. Against Ohio State, Penn came out on top 14-13 in a match that went down to the final point of the final bout. The Quakers closed their weekend with a loss to Notre Dame.
In the men's match with the Buckeyes, with the score tied 13-13 and both
Marcel Merchant and the Buckeyes' Jack Price sitting on four points, Merchant took the decisive point, setting off a raucous celebration from the Penn contingent.
The women finished the weekend with nine wins in 12 matches and the men won seven of 10 matches, pushing Coach Ma's career win total to 515.
Both teams are back in action next Sunday for the Tri-State Shark Showcase, hosted by Long Island University (LIU), the final event of the season before Ivy Round-Robins next month.
