Women's Soccer Defeats Lehigh 2-1 for First Win of 2022

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team picked up its first win of the season, and the first win of the Dr. Krissy Turner coaching era, as junior Lauren Teuschl and freshman Mallory Lucas scored in a 2-1 victory over Lehigh on Sunday afternoon at Rhodes Field.

Sunday's match was a match of firsts for the Red and Blue: First Penn win for Dr. Turner, first goal of the season for Teuschl, and first collegiate goal for Lucas.

Quaker Notemeal
*After opening the season with three draws, the Quakers earned their first win of the season.

*Penn outshot Lehigh by a 16-11 margin, with 11 of them coming in the first half. The Red and Blue also recorded six corner kicks to just three by the Mountain Hawks.

*Junior goalkeeper Gladu recorded five saves for the second straight match and picked up the win. Lehigh's keeper recorded seven in taking the loss.

*The match saw 17 total fouls, called as the Mountain Hawks were called for 12 fouls to five by the Quakers.

How It Happened
Lehigh opened the match with a shot in the second minute that went wide right, before Paige Kenton had Penn's first shot of the match in the eighth minute that went right at the Lehigh keeper.

Shortly after that, the Quakers opened the scoring for the third straight match. Peyton Raun sent a ball deep into the offensive zone for Miranda Farman to play. In the box, Farman sent a ball to a heavily guarded Teuschl, who worked around the defense and found the back of the net for her first goal of the season.
In the 15th minute, Penn tried to add to its lead but Farman and Teuschl fired off unsuccessful shots. Instead, the Mountain Hawks responded in the 18th minute. Mattie Murphy found the back of the net as Gladu was blocked by a defender and Murphy was able to get ball past her for the tying goal.

However, just seconds after entering the match near the half-hour mark Lucas put home the first goal of her collegiate career. Like Teuschl, Lucas was heavily guarded by the Lehigh defense but she was able to work around the defenders and put her shot past the diving keeper.
The Quakers recorded 11 shots in the first half and then managed just five in the second half. Shots by Kenton, Farman and Lucas were all saved as they attempted to add to the Quaker lead.

In the 84th minute, Lehigh went looking for the equalizer but Gladu made a diving save directing the shot away from the goal. The Mountain Hawks then were unable to convert on the succeeding corner.
Up Next
The Quakers continue their three-match homestand by hosting Navy (Sept. 8) and Stony Brook (Sept. 11) at Rhodes Field next weekend.
