About Penn's Inductees…
Francis "Reds" Bagnell was captain of Penn's 1950 football team and considered one of the best tailbacks in America that season, finishing third in the Heisman Trophy voting behind Vic Janowicz of Ohio State and Kyle Rote of SMU. He also was the Maxwell Award winner and Football Digest Player of the Year in 1950. An All-America quarterback for the Quakers at a time when the program regularly played before crowds of 60,000-80,000 at Franklin Field, he earned nine letters across three sports at Penn, three each in football, basketball and baseball. Of note, Bagnell collected 490 yards of total offense in Penn's 42-26 win over Dartmouth on October 14, 1950—a record that still stands 72 years later. That included 215 yards rushing, just the second 200-yard rushing game in program history and a single-game record that stood for 39 years. Bagnell was bestowed the University's prestigious Class of 1915 Award and the Spoon Award for 1950-51. Bagnell—who later in his life was chairman of the Maxwell Football Club—was inducted into the Penn Athletics Hall of Fame as a member of its Inaugural Class in 1996 and is also in the National Football Foundation/College Football Hall of Fame as a 1977 inductee. The Reds Bagnell Award is presented annually by the Maxwell Football Club to an individual for their contributions to football.
Susan Francia originally walked on to the women's rowing team at Penn, and it ended up being a life-changing move for her. As a senior, she earned Division I All-America honors from the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA). Francia would then spend a decade rowing for the USRowing national teams and winning two Olympic gold medals, rowing in the victorious U.S. Women's Eight at the 2008 Games in Beijing—Team USA's first-ever gold medal in that event—and the 2012 Games in London. Francia also won two World Cup titles with the Women's Eight (2007, 2008) and five FISA World Rowing Championships golds, most notably in 2009 when she and partner Erin Cafaro battled to the finish line to win a historic first gold for the US in the women's pair. Their performance earned them World Rowing's 2009 Female Crew of the Year award. Francia also won the Remenham Challenge Cup at the Henley Royal Regatta in 2006 and 2011.
