ITHACA, N.Y. – The University of Pennsylvania men's lightweight crew opened its Cup season on Saturday at Cornell, and in favorable racing conditions the Big Red swept all three races to retain the Matthews Trophy and earn the Leonard Cup.
Varsity Eight
Cornell retained the Matthews Trophy with a 4.51-second victory over Penn. The Big Red covered the Cayuga Lake's 2,000-meter course in 5:45.00, while Penn was timed in 5:49.51.
Second Varsity Eight
Cornell was victorious by just over four seconds in this race, as well, winning in 5:48.21 ahead of Penn's 5:52.29.
Third Varsity Eight
Cornell placed two boats in this race and both finished ahead of Penn. The Big Red's third boat was clocked in 6:00.03 and its fourth boat was timed in 6:13.81. Penn was behind both of them in 6:25.64.
