PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania baseball team picked up a 10-inning, 4-3 walk-off win over Delaware State on Tuesday in the Quakers' first extra inning game of the year.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a quiet inning-and-a-half to start the game,
Seth Werchan launched a towering home run to right field in the second, putting Penn (17-8) up 1-0.
Penn starter
Carson Ozmer kept the Red and Blue in front with three scoreless innings, striking out two batters in his final inning of work. After a scoreless fourth from
Will Tobin and scoreless fifth from
Seth DeVries, Delaware State (9-13) jumped in front on a three-run homer to dead center in the sixth.
In the bottom of the seventh, after Werchan worked a walk,
Cole McGonigal launched a game-tying two-run shot to right for his first collegiate homer and just his second hit of the season.
Neither tea put a man past second base in the eighth or ninth, sending the game into extras. In the top of the 10th, Delaware State loaded the baes on three walks, but
David Shoemaker induced a groundout back to himself to get out of the jam.
In the Quaker 10th,
Tommy Courtney led off with a bunt single, advancing to second following an error on the play. Next up stepped
Ben Miller, who knocked a single into right center just past a diving attempt by the Hornets' second baseman, easily scoring the speedy Courtney and setting off a field-storming celebration from the Penn dugout.
QUAKER NOTEMEAL
*Miller's single was the first walk-off hit for the Quakers since
Cole Palis' single against La Salle last April 20.

*Shoemaker and DeVries both recorded their 10th strikeouts of the season, giving Penn nine pitchers who have hit the double-digit mark this year. In all, the Quakers have recorded 57 more strikeouts than their opponents.
