PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania softball team earned a doubleheader split with the Yale Bulldogs on Friday afternoon. The visitors took game one 5-4 and then Penn used a two-run shot in the first inning off the bat of
Sarah Schneider en route to an 8-0 win. Penn earned its third shutout victory of the season and its first run-rule win in 2022.
GAME 1: Yale 5, Penn 4
The Bulldogs used the long ball in game one as they hit a three-run shot in the second inning and a solo shot in the fourth inning, both to dead center field to earn the game on win.

After Yale got a run back in the third,
Bella Fiorentino hit a ground rule double that allowed
Laurel McKelvey to score but kept
Emma Nedley at third making it a two-run game and not a one-run. Next batter up,
Sarah Schneider hit a RBI base hit through the left side to score Nedley, making it 4-3.
A solo shot in the fourth for Yale gave them a two-run advantage again.
Brianna Brown hit an infield single to short that scored
Julia Schneider to cut the deficit to just one.
Penn battled but couldn't push the tying run across as the winning run came to the plate in the seventh.
GAME 2: Penn 8, Yale 0 (5 innings)
In the bottom of the first inning Penn scored all the runs it needed to as
Sarah Schneider's two-run shot proved to be the winning run. This was her 10th of the season.
The Quakers kept the scoring going in the second inning as they added four runs on four hits. All four runs came with two outs.

Sarah Schneider came up and hit a base hit up the middle to score
Laurel McKelvey from second.
Bella Fiorentino hit a two-RBI double to right center that scored both Schneiders giving Penn a 5-0 lead.
Julia Mortimer hit a base hit up the middle to score Fiorentino putting Penn two runs from a run-rule victory. She then got Penn another run closer as she hit a bases loaded sacrifice fly making it 7-0.
In the bottom of the fifth inning Penn needed just one run to win the game. They sent six batters to the plate and managed to get the one run they needed on one hit. With the bases loaded and two-out, Fiorentino hit the walk off base hit.
While Penn got the job done on offense in game two,
Julia Longo excelled in the circle pitching a complete game shutout. She allowed no runs on a pair of hits while striking out five batters.
Quaker Notemeal
- Bella Fiorentino, Sarah Schneider, and Julia Schneider combined for 11 of Penn's 15 hits in Friday's doubleheader. Fiorentino and S. Schneider were both 4-for-6 on the day and J. Schneider went 3-for-5. J. Schneider was 1-for-1 in game two with three walks and three runs scored.
- Sarah Schneider hit her 10th home run of season bringing Penn's season total to 25. S. Schneider's solo shot in the first inning proved to be the game-winning home run.
- Longo went the distance in game two, pitching five shutout innings allowing two hits and no runs while striking out five. This was Longo's eighth complete game of the season.
- Penn's game two run-rule victory was the first of 2022.
