Softball Tops Yale for a 9-1 Senior Day Victory

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania softball team closed out its 2022 season on a high note with a 9-1 victory in just under one hour and 30 minutes. On day in which it honored it's six-member senior class, the Penn Quakers used a six-run first inning to claim the victory over the Yale Bulldogs in the season finale. Penn picked up its third Ivy series win. The Red and Blue finish the season with a 12-31 overall record and a 7-14 record in Ivy play.

Prior to the game today, the Quakers honored its six seniors for senior day. The senior class of Julia Longo, Julia Schneider, Emma Nedley, Corrie Phillips, Ashley Waco, and Laurel McKelvey all made the start on senior day.

Penn 9, Yale 1 (5 innings)
The Bulldogs capitalized on a first inning error by the Penn defense jumping out to a 1-0 lead.

That would soon become a small footnote in the game as the Quakers bats jumped all over the Yale pitching. Penn sent 11 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first. Sarah Schneider erased the Yale lead with her 11th home run of the season making it 2-1 Penn. A few batters later Emma Nedley followed suit and launched a ball to straight away center field padding the Penn lead making it 5-1. Sammy Fenton hit an RBI double to center that scored Corrie Phillips for a 6-1 lead.

The first inning would last a little over 36 minutes.

Julia Longo was in cruise control after the first inning as she scattered two hits over the final four innings of the game. The top of the fourth lasted just under one minute and 36 seconds and featured four pitches and three great defensive plays by Julia Schneider, Brianna Brown, and Ashley Waco

Penn added three more runs in the bottom of the third inning as all three runs came with the bases loaded. In the span of four batters Penn scored on a fielder's choice, and back-to-back bases loaded walks.

Quaker Notemeal
  • For the first time this season the Quakers batted around in an inning as they sent 11 batters to the plate in the first inning.
  • Penn hit two more home runs on Saturday closing its season with a total of 27. Both home runs on the day came in the first inning as Sarah Schneider hit a two-run shot for a 2-1 Penn lead. Then a few batters later Emma Nedley hit her fourth home run of the year, a three-run shot to dead centerfield. This marks the ninth time in 2022 Penn had a multi-homer game.
  • Sarah Schneider hit her 11th home run of season. She has led the Ivy League in that stat all season long. With 11 home runs on the season she moves to second all-time for single season home runs.
  • For the just the second time this season the Quakers batters stuck out a total of zero times. Last time that happened was the opening game at Harvard, earlier this month.
  • For the second-straight game, Longo went the distance. She pitched five innings allowing just one run on three hits as she struck out four and walked three for win number six. This was her ninth complete game of the season.
