PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania softball team dropped its Tuesday doubleheader against Dartmouth at Penn Park. The Big Green took game one 4-0. Penn took a 2-0 lead after the first inning of game two but four unanswered runs for Dartmouth led them to a 4-2 victory.
Game 1: Dartmouth 4, Penn 0
The Big Green opened the game with a an infield hit to third and then got a pair of runners as they capitalized on a fielding error by the Quakers shortstop.
Julia Longo made the start for Penn and got a fly out to left for the first out. The next batter would hit a line drive right at
Bella Fiorentino at first who then stepped on base for the unassisted double play.
Dartmouth then took a 2-0 lead in the top of a the second with a pair of RBI base hits. This early lead is one they would not relinquish.
Penn got its first scoring chance with two-outs in the bottom the second as
Emma Nedley hit a double to center and
Julia Schneider followed with a walk. The Dartmouth pitcher then got a strikeout to end the threat.
Penn had runners in each inning from the second to sixth innings but couldn't score any runs.
Dartmouth added two more runs in the top of the fifth both coming with two-outs. The Big Green used a double and a base hit to score both runs on back-to-back batters.
Game 2: Dartmouth 4, Penn 2
Penn took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning as
Corrie Phillips drew a bases loaded RBI walk and then
Dana Anderson hit a sac fly to score the second run.
Dartmouth battled back as the rain came down to score one in the second inning and then added two more in the third inning to take a 3-2 lead.
The Big Green added a fourth run in the top of the seventh as Billie McFayden hit a leadoff solo shot over the left field fence.
Penn rallied in the bottom of the seventh getting the winning run to the plate.
Brianna Brown led off the inning with a base hit to left and then Nedley reached on a fielder's choice that eliminated Brown at second. With two-outs Fiorentino singled through the left side to bring the winning run to the plate. The Dartmouth pitcher battled a pesky Phillips who was looking to repeat as the walk off hero but she would strikeout to end the game.
Quaker Notemeal
- Penn was shutout for the eighth time this season as they fell 4-0 in game one.
- Longo went the distance in game one, pitching seven innings allowing four runs on nine hits while striking out three and walking two. This was Longo's seventh complete game of the season.
Up Next
Penn and Dartmouth will close out their Ivy series on Wednesday with first pitch set for 1 p.m. The Red and Blue will close out the regular season with a three-game series against the Yale Bulldogs on Friday and Saturday.
