PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania baseball team swept its second straight Ivy League series and ran its winning streak to seven games with a 4-2 win over Brown University Sunday afternoon from Meiklejohn Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After each team loaded the bases with two out in the first, but failed to push one across, Penn (26-9, 12-2) jumped on top in the second behind some errant pitching and fielding by the Bears.
Seth Werchan was hit by a pitch with one out and
Justin Carboni, making his first start of the season, followed with a walk. After a wild pitch moved each runner up 90 feet,
Tommy Courtney reached on a fielding error by the shortstop, sending Carboni to third and scoring Werchan.
Jackson Appel followed with a groundout to short, scoring Carboni.
Brown (8-22, 3-12) halved the deficit in the fifth, then tied the game in the sixth on a pair of solo home runs.
With the game still tied in the bottom of the seventh,
Wyatt Henseler reached on a hit by pitch, eventually advancing to third on a wild pitch and a passed ball.
Ben Miller took full advantage of the situation, driving Henseler in with a sacrifice fly. After
Craig Larsen reached on an error and advanced to second on another wild pitch,
Cole Palis laced an opposite field single, scoring Larsen with an insurance run.
Owen Coady struck out three batters over the final two innings as he closed out the game, improving to 5-0 on the year.
