PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania softball team managed just a single run in two games at Princeton on Saturday. The Tigers shutout the Quakers, 3-0 in game one. Penn brought the go ahead run to the plate in game two but couldn't plate any runs as Princeton won 3-1.
Game 1: Princeton 3, Penn 0
For the second straight game,
Bella Fiorentino made the start in the circle for the Quakers. She pitched four innings of three run ball allowing six hits and stranding three runners on base.
The Tigers struck first in the second inning plating two runs on base hit to left. They would add another run as Fiorentino walked in a run in the fourth inning.
The Quakers saw just four reach base,
Corrie Phillips drew a walk in the second inning.
Sammy Fenton had Penn's only hit in game one. She would be erased as
Brianna Brown grounded into a fielder's choice. In the seventh inning
Sarah Schneider reached on a fielding error by the Tigers third baseman.
Olivia Szewczyk pitched the final two innings for Penn as she allowed no runs on two hits.
Game 2: Princeton 3, Penn 1
The Quakers looked to be in good position to take an early lead in game two as Brown,
Laurel McKelvey, and Fiorentino all drew back-to-back-to-back one-out walks. However, the Tigers pitcher was able to get the next two batters out on swinging strike outs.
Julia Longo made the start in the circle for the Quakers as got the first batter she faced out. The next batter laced a triple to left field that got under the glove of the diving Brown. The run would score on the following batter as she hit a sac fly to right field.
Princeton scored another run in the bottom of the third as an errant throw by S. Schneider on a stolen base allowed the runner on third to score.
Fiorentino opened the top of the fourth with a walk and then was pinch ran for by
Madison Bauerle. After advancing on a wild pitch, Bauerle came around to score on a double to right field off the bat of
Julia Mortimer. She would get to third on a ground out by
Emma Nedley and then back-to-back strikeouts ended the Quakers threat.
After leading off the bottom of the fifth with a base hit the Tigers got a advanced the runner on a ground out and then a base hit scored the third run for the home team.
Penn threatened in the top of the seventh getting the go ahead run to the plate but couldn't plate any runs.
Quaker Notemeal
- In Saturday's doubleheader the Quakers were limited to just five hits and five walks in 14 innings. Brown was 2-for3 in game two and picked up a stolen base in each game.
- Longo went the distance in game two, pitching six innings allowing three runs on eight hits while walking and striking out none. This was Longo's six complete game of the season.

Penn and Princeton will conclude their Ivy series on Sunday with first pitch set for 12:30 p.m. The Quakers will return to Philly for its rescheduled Ivy series with Dartmouth on Tuesday and Wednesday. The two teams will play a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Tuesday and then play a single game on Wednesday at 1 p.m. The Red and Blue will close out the regular season with a three-game series against the Yale Bulldogs on Friday and Saturday.
